Re: What Is The Best/Thickest Clear Coat Around?

Nope, the thickness has nothing to do with it. You can shoot multiple layers of clear coat and it will still get scratched. Thick clear coat has nothing to do with scratch resistance. Think about, it's thicker, won't the top layer still get scratched? Of course it will. What a thicker clear coat will give you is the ability to repeatedly polish over time and still have enough clearcoat on the car to protect the basecoat.

You will want to look at getting a very hard clearcoat however beware that it will chip easier.

PPG OEM's ceramiclear coats and self healing paints are used on Benz and Volvo including the new Infinitis. I don't know if this can be applied aftermarket at a paint shop. You will want to talk to DanNY here since he's much more knowledgble about paints than I am, he also does some body work.

When going for a clear coat use something high solid. PPG offers a few different lines of clear coat, if your uncle is repainting it for you, I would believe he would know which products would be good.

ANY clearcoat will scratch...that's ANY. MB, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, Honda, Nissan, etc.

If you're getting fine scratches when you're washing your car then you're not washing your car correctly. learn to have the right tools to wash your car and you'll get less scratches.

i don't understand what you're really looking for here. are you saying that you read ppl say nissan has a thin clear coat...what do you think it going to happen if the clear is thin? rock chips? less protection on scrapes?

Personally i use PPG Concept 2021. It goes on nice, good shine/gloss, and it's a little harder of a clear compared to others.

you can spray 100 coats on it...it won't do jack on the scratches. from your damage NO paint/clear would've saved you from that.

if you're interested in protecting your paint...might consider looking into paint protection films.

do yourself a favor...if your uncle is a professional body shop guy...LET HIM DO HIS JOB. he'll know what's the best thing to do. whatever brand of paint he use...he will use it. if he like working with another brand (dupont, BASF, glasurite, etc)...let him use it and let him use his best judgement. stop reading what "other people" are saying. about 95% of them never picked up a HVLP spray gun and their "experience" of body work is from a rattle can that reads dupli color or krylon.

Re: What Is The Best/Thickest Clear Coat Around?

DJDave, like Dan said you're probably not washing your car correctly as all.

Using the wrong wash media for both washing and drying can cause some severe marring and swirls.

I use the two bucket wash method with grit guards and a boars hair brush for both of my cars and dried with a cordless leaf blower (coat of wax or sealant makes the water run right off) and just a slight go over in certain parts that need further drying with an "Absorb-It" or chamois. If the car is particularly dirty, I'll use a foam lance to apply soap and let it wash most of the grit/dirt off the car before washing.

I detail both of my cars myself with a Makita rotary and probably only need to do a light polishing once a year to keep the finish looking as defect free as possible. This is done with a light polish containing diminishing abrasives and not a compound.

AirRunner suspension drops the FX to the frame, then I lift it back up again, great for entering and departing as well .
