Catalytic Converter P0420

Hey guys need some help, SES went off, went to autozone to have it checked came back as o2 sensor. Went to dealer told me that I need to replace the catalytic converter and it would be around 1000$

Any suggestions as to what other cat to buy that will be like oem and where would be a reasonable place in NYC to get it done??

Thanks

Re: Catalytic Converter P0420

I would gut the precats and install spacers to get rid of the cel. Ive done it and its freed up some power too.

I wouldn't rush into condemning the cats. Check this out.

It's a shame those precats are welded and are on piece. This trick really works. I have done it on other cars.

Re: Catalytic Converter P0420

I checked the link, pretty interesting information.
For starters I will not put any kind of chemical cleaners inside my gas tank I did put a fuel injector cleaner, and the SES light went off in a week, then came back in 2 weeks. Then once again went away in 2 weeks and came right back in 4 weeks. Again, pretty weird. So my question is this, I have 193K miles on her, 6 speed manual with all options minus navi and elite
So maybe it is time for a catalytic change.
My main concerns: 1. Reasonable price for what I get.. 2. I dont want any loud sound coming from the exhaust (basically stock oem sound) 3. Where should I get this done, any suggestions?

Thank you for all your input!

Re: Catalytic Converter P0420

i see ... i really couldn't care less for the code ... just don't want to ruin my engine ... i used the fuel injector cleaner ... goes away but comes back in 600 miles or so ... if you "gut out" the headers, is there a difference in the exhaust sound? I just don't know where to turn to or what to do?

Re: Catalytic Converter P0420

There will more a slight more "grunt" in your exhaust tone if you gut your precats. I dont know how much of difference it would sound on a stock exhaust.Just as Stuntman said, Maxboy gutted my precats as well. I gutted my precats just so I wouldnt have to deal with this issue your having now. I would just gut them and install spacers for the o2's which is cheaper then buying headers and getting them installed.
