2. do i need to apply sealant on both sides of the gasket (indide to grove and on top?)

Hope you got this finished already, but if you didn't....You dont sealant on ANYTHING except the valve cover gasket itself. You only dab the groove of the actual valve cover in about 4 places and fit the valve cover gasket in the groove on the valve cover. Let it sit for a few minutes, now when you flip the valve cover, the gasket is stuck in there. Now you tighten it down in a criss cross patter starting from the center out. If you don't do this, it will leak again in less than a month.

The flat side of the spark plug tube seal goes on the valve cover side, the other part should have a slight angle, and that goes on the spark plug tube side.

If not just look at how the ones you removed were positioned.

You can put the coils back in whatever position you want. The 3 front are the same and the 3 rear are the same. Your common sense will show you that you can't swap a front coil with a rear though.

Good luck.

Re: Help rear valve cover gasket

Hey THanks, but i did already with maxfever1987s help....and i messed up i think..

what i did was put sealant on both sides because my friend who is a genious broke one of the dam middle bolt....the bolt is located in the middle on the far left....maxfever told me just fill it up with sealant...i pray it works, beacuse i hate taking that hose under the manifold off..

how much lb of force are u suppose to use on the valve cover screw?

Re: Help rear valve cover gasket

By puting sealant arnd the broken part of the bolt is ONLY A TEMP FIX NOT SOMETHING FDOR THE LONG RUN, i said this becuz it was too late to do any drilling and/or rethreading at that hour. If anyone here ever breaks the bolt which holds down the valve cover you shoul get the redrill/rethreading kit from autozone to take out the broken and put a new one afterwards.

My friend broke a bolt earlier last year due to excessive force on the tighhtening on the valve cover bolts and the bolt broke in half and the top of the bolt with the grommet fell to the ground. He simply put sealant arnd it and called it a day. Till this day he has had no problem but it should be taken care of by purchasing a rethreading kit.

Re: Help rear valve cover gasket

^^^ the worst case is when that valve cover (standoff) bolt breaks in one of the corners of the valve cover.. (almost instant leak)

thats why the idea of sealant is a temp fix only

You tighten it in two stages, first one is 2ft lbs, then you go over them again criss crossing at about 6ft lbs. That isnt very much force at all. They dont need to be tightened down much. That oil is slowly going to seep out and stain, hopefully it wont drip bad, but you will have to do it over correctly. Afterall, that was the point of you changing it in the first place. You could have used an extractor bit and took the broken bolt out and replaced it with a valve cover bolt from the front valve cover. You then could have put a 10mm bolt with a washer to replace the front valve cover bolt you removed. This way when you go to Nissan and get the correct bolt, you remove the temporary bolt out the front valve cover and put the new OEM bolt in. You also could have eliminated those coolant hoses at the back pretty easily. Just loop and conect the two coolant ports on the coolant log and you're home free. If you ever need to do it again, shoot me a PM, I bang this kinda job out in an hour.

Your friend has a leak or will have a leak eventually. The threads shouldnt have been messed up though, he just needed an extractor kit one would hope. You can get away with using a vice grip if a piece of the broken bolt was protruding. I'm sure thats not what happened though.

HA! During a cam install my buddy broke off one of the 10mm bolts that goes into one of the cam caps due to tq wrench set improperly, so he claims. Extractor bit worked beautifully though. TJ to the rescue, lol.

I hate when cars have a volatile point somewhere and the bolt snaps, or something breaks because you were the very next person to remove it or touch it, lol. Those are nightmares.

You really werent supposed to use any more than 4 dabs of sealant on ONE side of the gasket. The sealant will harden and cause irregularities between the head and the valve cover gasket.

sure blame it on the TQ wrench that has the actual SET TQ rating on the side!! or just maybe... foot-lbs IS NOT AND NEVER EVER WILL BE inch-lbs

I bet you $1000000 I know exactly who that "buddy" was

------

if you're going to use sealant..
you should apply it along the edge where the gasket and the head have that little gap after the valve cover is torqued down.. and apply it evenly to seal up the gap from one adjacent bolt to the other..

better than putting sealant on the gasket and then torquing/squishing all that together
