Bolt On Upgrades
I Have A 94 SE 5spd (VE30DE) And As Many Know They Didnt Make Hardly Anything For The DOHC... I've Been On The Mad Search For Some Headers And Purchased Some OBX's Bc Tuning Depot Said It Fit The VE Model Engine Which It DIDN'T!
Does ANYBODY Know Who And If Indeed They Do Make A Header For This Engine? Im To The Point Where Im Ready To Swap It Out For A 4th Gen Engine Bc Of The Mass Of Parts Available For It. Jim Wolf Only Makes A Performance ECU For Mine And Other Then That Im Fucked!

don't mean to sound like a hater..
but looking from a technological standpoint + realistic view + considering bang for the buck + reliability + availability + etc etc...
DE-k/3.5L swap + EU and forget about using outdated overpriced and impossible to find parts, then finding something to actually be able to tune it with.
unless you have time + money for a CU$$TOM setup

does the engine line up with the VE cross member...how about the mounts?
how about transmission mounts?
what happens to the axles? does the hub splines match up?
what about the OBDII (ECU)?
what bolt ons? you think a y-pipe for a VQ 4th gen will fit on a 3rd gen body? how about the exhaust? VQ exhaust bolts right in on a 3rd gen body?
yup...should be good.

I didn't know originality was more significant of a factor than performance on a near 20 year old car.
but then again I didn't know performance itself was significant on a 20 year old car either.

But I also know that performance itself was significant on a 40 year old car.
Advice to the OP, the 3rd gen is a great car, but you have to put the money factor, when maintaining an old car like that you gotta keep the body in shape. A lot of parts for that engine is obsolete if not they weren't made for that application. So if you want to keep that car change to a 3.5 or if you want to have a gas saver, drop an SR20 from a Sentra. Other than that those are your best options.

I've seen guys use the OBX SS headers made for the VG with some modifications or just get exhaust from Cattman or warpspeed. I've got OBX headers/front pipe to Magnaflow cat/res pipe to a Megan 2.5"inlet 3.0"outlet. With a good tune she's a torque monster classic v6 4DSC!!

Which car is 40 years old? are you talking about muscle cars? Those cars were made with performance in mind. The maxima was pieced together with performance through a sticker that says 4DSC.
Why would he want a gas saver if he is looking into performance? Do you have proof a sr20 will line up in a 3rd gen? Why do you continuously post garbage?
Advice to OP, other than listening to K-Ryder those are your best options.

There's plenty of modded 3rdgens on maxima.org and the 3.5l swap into a 3rdgen is considered a fools swap!!

Re: Bolt On Upgrades
If Maxxkid can drop an RB26DETT into a 4thgen Maxima with major fabrication, then someone can fabricate a sr20de to fit into a 3rdgen. Money talks people. So I stand by my statement. Even Big E Dog converted his 2ndgen into a RWD. Do something big and out of the ordinary. An inline motor can handle a lot of power.
Do I need to support my statement with thread. Please allow me.

There's not many options for bolt-ons for a 3rdgen anyway. Usually you would need to swap the motor out for a vq30de-k or a vq35de. It just depends on how big your pockets are. Some people think outside the box and do what everyone thinks isn't possible, or the norm. Everyone's car is practically the same, same drops, rims, lipkits, etc. Many have done F/I. It's all a trend, everyone has done everything the last person did, only thing different is the driver. And some do beyond what others think isn't possible. So yes I do understand what I write, I've also done a lot of research on custom swaps for various cars.

have you actually heard/witnessed someone swapping OUT a factory V6 motor for a 4 cyl motor that involved massive fabrication work?
who in their right mind would downsize their motor to get less power and maybe slightly better MPG.
do me a favor...don't talk about 3rd gens because clearly you know zero about the topic.
sure there's not many bolt ons for 3rd gens because they are over 20 yrs old and not many are left on the road. also in the early 90s the import modding scene was very very new. around late 4th gen was when things started to pick up in the aftermarket modding and etc where you have companies making parts for maximas....and there wasn't really a whole lot at the time either.
no you "usually" don't need to swap out to a VQ30 or VQ35. there are still tons of parts available for VG motors. i assure you my car is not the same as someone else car. the z31 guys are still very much in the motor sport given it's more grassroots and less mainstream. JWT still offers billet cams (stage 1 and stage 2) with upgraded valve train. of course vadim will say the VG is a POS motor because VQ is god of all motors...but that's another day for that discussion.
here's some Z31 dynos running VG30ET motors...
http://www.redz31.net/turbofaq/dyno.graphs.html
let me see your "research" on swaps. it is more than doing a google search?
just because you converted a FWD car to a RWD car just tells me you have a lot of money and time to burn. at the end of the day you don't even know how well (or poorly) the car is going to drive. people were paid a ton of money at nissan to make sure things are built properly and correctly....then you come in and rip it all out. IMO it's more bragging rights more than anything else. sure i can drop a 2JZ motor into a maxima and run SC300 drive train on it and crank out massive power...doesn't mean it should be done.
you're soooo wrong and out of your element that you don't even have a clue. so please do yourself a favor and stop dropping your "thoughts" on 3rd gens and drop your knowledge to some newbie in the 4th gen section.

Re: Bolt On Upgrades
3rdgen Maxima's have been custom boosted more times than I can remember and the VG turbo is fairly simply with great results with factory internals. Instead of swapping in a 4cylinder or another 6 you could just pull the factory VG/VE and build her up for even better results than leaving the stock internals.

Other than silly attempts of putting an sr20 into 3rd gen (haha), I'm loving sp2 on 3rd gen right now.
Thanks Dan for posting this for us 3rd gen owners.
