Radar Detectors

Sooo the big question, is there a use for a radar detector in NY?

I have one (hand me down) a passport 8500 or something and It rarely helps me. Theres always the "false alarm x band" or the "maybe its a cop K band".
The Ka is what i always watch out for but really rare.
Quite more than a few times i see cops on the side of cross island or grand central Waiting to pull someone ofver for speeding, but the radar doesnt go off AT ALL?

What i hear is that NYPD uses laser which is too late for the radar to pick up bc the cop already got you.
And that they only turn on lasar/radar AFTER they see u speeding which makes the detector useless.
Anyone have info on this? Bc sometimes i feel my radar is useless....

Disclaimer: i do not condone speeding neither do i speed i have it just to be on the safe side

You're confusing instant-on radar (ie. POP) with LIDAR.

Instant-on typically is not laser based, it's just a specific gun that can be turned on and obtain a speed reading within a few seconds. LIDAR (laser) can obtain a speed reading very quickly so yes, unless you get a bounce off another car, typically laser detection is worthless. Laser jamming is fully legal since you aren't violating any FCC regulations with regards to transmitting RF, you're just transmitting light.

Most highway patrol in NYC has a few LIDAR guns in operation. There are also Ka based guns out there. LIDAR tends to be a more expensive gun for the department to purchase.

Be careful, they just don't only obtain a reading from the highway, but sometimes you might see a patrol car parked on top of an overpass with the cop out of the car shooting laser down on the highway, able to cover both directions of traffic very easily. He then just radios ahead to another car which pulls you over.

Re: Radar Detectors

Go here.

Radardetector.net

I'm on there and been educating myself with Radar and Lidar countermeasures.

With Radar, unless its instant on, you're good to go with Ka or K band. NYPD uses K band on the Cross Island Southbound by Union Tpke. They use LIDAR on the Clearview (sometimes radar- Ka) and possibly other areas. You can get Laser jammers such as Blinders or Laser Interceptors (I think these are the best)

Go online or if you want, I can meet you in person to show you the CM I have. Just send me a PM.

soo Instant on detection would be considered the K and Ka bands?
whereas LIDAR is laser?

Thanks, this cleared it up a lot now.

My conclusion is that radar detectors can help to a point if the cop is actually using LIDAR or instant on
I also hate when i have passengers in the car saying "WHERES THE COP" when the radar goes off for false alarms like automated doors at the local lol key food

Re: Radar Detectors

Instant on is when they pull the trigger on the gun (or hit the button depending on which gun there is) and it obtains an reading instanly.
The only way you will get to know if a LEO (Law enforcement officer) has radar is if:

1. he leaves it on. This is considered constant on (C/O)
2. He pulls the trigger long enough for the radar signal to bounce and hopefully hits your car from far away so you'll get advanced warning. This is also known as 'scatter'
3. you have a crystal ball.

Instant on can be 1 of the 3 bands here used in the US. X, K, or Ka. K and Ka are mostly used here in NY. I haven't seen X band used in over 10 years or so.

LIDAR is short for Light Detetion and Ranging. Poor mans way of saying it, Laser. Once they shoot you, forget it. The reading is instant.

LOL, I tell my friends when they feed me that line, I tell them "it detects radar and laser, it doesn't sniff the cops out".

If you want to see my setup, radar detector and laser jammers, shoot me a PM. I'm in the Queens/Nassau area.

Re: Radar Detectors
